*The Bukovina Society has been involved in annual Oktoberfests for nearly as long as it has been in existence. The first entry was with the long established Oktoberfest sponsored by the Volga German Society of Ellis County, Kansas at the time of homecoming at Ft. Hays University. The Bukovina Society sponsored a booth for several years featuring ethnic delicacies, primarily "hemetschwangers" an apple filled pastry. When merchants from the city of Ellis, home to the Society headquarters, began an annual Oktoberfest, the Society was asked to conduct opening ceremonies and staff a booth. This continued until the city changed the celebration to a Fall Fest. A new Oktoberfest event has been scheduled for Hays in addition to the traditional fest associated with the Ft. Hays University homecoming. The Society again was asked to participate in the opening ceremonies.
